FYI: This location (or maybe UHaul's billing dept in general) charged me a $5 order-handling fee, and here's the kicker: They promised to refund it only if I submit a review online. So basically they charged me a $5 no-review fee. This seems like an abuse of the online-service-reviewing system ...More(which Yelp is a part of!), and you should be aware that any positive reviews you may read are DEFINITELY BIASED.
It is 8:26 am and I have just returned the most unsafe truck that I have ever rented. The one star rating is for Ms. Virginia who cleans the trucks & logs the mileage outside because she was pleasant, and the truck was clean. This truck a) revved up to 3 RPM just to get to 25 MPH the NYC speed ...More limit, b) on a major expressway with the speed limit of 50 MPH the speedometer read 50 but the actual speed was 45 MPH or less at times (I know because my daughter followed behind me in my car and told me how fast I was actually going). Traffic either backed up behind me, or sped around me c) I missed my appointment that was scheduled for pick up because a 1:45 minute trip would have taken closer to 3 hours had I proceeded and the person had to go to work and finally d) the suspension horrible - even a crack in the road almost made the truck lose control and last but not least, e) customer service - stinks. After I explained everything to the manager, Mr. Douglass, flat..."Sorry about that" (and without "!" because it didn't really matter that he had a dissatisfied customer so no emphatic note). Just is this the credit card I want to use. I live in the area and try to support local businesses. I have rented from this establishment in the past, but when I feel that a truck is rented, knowing that the intention is to drive 175 miles with a two (2) day rental, but I return it with 50 miles used on the same day that I rented it, I expect that concern for customer safety and to secure business, you would do your best with safety first in mind. So for 50 miles (from Cambria Hts, to Flushing, to over the Throggs Neck Bridge and a toll near New Rochelle ( after I paid the toll but couldn't reach Connecticut because the truck was a piece of junk - clean but junk and I had to turn around for my safety and others) here is what it cost me: Rental: $148.00 Tolls w/o reaching destination: $35.50 Fear and aggravation: Priceless I say, "never say never", but I hope I have better options than this! Going to write corporate as well. And they have the nerve to charge $1.79 per mile--but I figured that out, they need to get the greatest bang for THEIR buck in case you can't reach your destination. Like me.
If there was an option to give no stars I would. Parroting the sentiments below, the upkeep and maintenance of the vehicles is appalling. I rented a truck and upon inspection I noticed there was a horrible exhaust leak which I informed the attendant at the walk around phase. He stared at me b ...Morelankly and did not offer another truck or indicate that this vehicle was safe. A mile away from the facility, the truck's check engine light came on to further terrify me. Whatever was wrong with the engine caused me to burn gas at an excessive rate which ended up costing me more on top of the inflated weekend rates that U-Haul uses. There is a 100% mark up of mileage from $1/ mile to $2/mile during the weekend. THIS IS TEXTBOOK PRICE GOUGING! Another irritating factor was the fact that I needed to provide not ONE BUT TWO phone numbers to rent a truck and if there was no answer or pick up, then they wouldn't give me a truck. So giving my house phone wasn't okay because no one was home to pick it up. So I ended up having to give a friend's number beyond my own cell phone. Not sure what the logic behind this is, other than to hold the other party responsible if you can't be contacted. I am extremely disappointed that a large corporation has locations like this one that clearly doesn't prioritize customer safety. You are better off supporting a small business than a corporation that does not regulate the quality of the service.
Visited today to make sure my car hitch and wiring was all in order so I will not have an issue when I pick up my trailer in a couple weeks. The woman inside the office was very helpful and even moved trailers out of the way so I could hook up to the one I reserved to make sure everything was g ...Moreood. The trailer light was not working so she had me try another trailer to make sure my wiring was good. Thank you for all your help and I look forward to my upcoming rental.
